Innovative Groups

Our programs are supported by innovative groups that are offered to the youth who participate in our services.  By having access to study help, employment support, and other relationship-building activities, our youth have more success in achieving their goals.

Tutor Link is a weekly tutoring program that offers volunteer tutoring support to our truant youth who may have fallen behind in their studies. This program is new, yet has already helped youth to improve their grades!

Work Link is a new initiative of The Link to provide young adults ages 17-21 with work readiness training designed to increase the occupational skills necessary to obtain and succeed in employment.  Participants are residents of Lindquist Apartments or clients of the Truancy Intervention Program. Though our clients have learned to take care of themselves in many respects, they are in need of employability skills and the opportunity to obtain entry level positions. Hiring these youth helps them to gain useful job skills and adds to their work experience, and also helps these youth to increase their independence.

Youth for Justice keeps at-risk youth positively occupied during summer months as they perform community service projects while enhancing their critical thinking, teamwork, communications, planning and administrative skills. This program was effectively carried out over the summer of 2005 with 14 individuals, ages 15 to 17, choosing to create a positive change for themselves and their communities.

Women Educating Women assists young women in developing a sense of identity, self-esteem, and empowerment through group interaction and education.  After a focus group was held, the youth confirmed the goals of their group and developed a list of topics they would like to explore through speakers, educational exercises and field trips.  Topics include health, self-esteem, relationships, communication, community service, advocacy, and career exploration. This project has served nearly 50 youth, ages 12 – 18, in its first two years.

Health Realization 101 facilitates action-planning to apply the resiliency principles of the Health Realization Community Empowerment Model.  This group also teaches cultural competency and empathy.  Group topics include:  Inner Health, Ways of Thinking, Thought Cycles, Separate Realities, Moods and Emotions, Role Playing, and Action Planning

Recreational Activities create opportunities for cultural, recreational and athletic social engagement outings that provide ways to develop positive peer relationships and community connections.

Project Success offers an evidence-based chemical abuse prevention curriculum to youth who are at risk of involvement with drugs and alcohol.
